Recent work

Today I thought I would mix things up a bit and show you some of the shoots that I've been working on lately.  Ive signed on 2 new clients in the last week or so so things are a bit manic at times, trying to juggle a 4 year old, a 1 month old, a household and a styling business.  When Im not styling, Im doing social media work for clients (posting on their behalf, content creation, competitor analysis and the list goes on), and when Im not doing all of that, Im probably folding laundry, feeding my newborn or trying to keep my 4 year old occupied.

This is a shoot I did using the lovely range from Seed + Soul and gave me an opportunity to work with my favourite white marble background and blush-coloured roses. I've just recently signed on a food brand to my client list which means more food styling. I absolutely LOVE working with food: the colour palettes that evolve during the set up of the image inspire me to try out new things while the textures of the ingredients offer up an opportunity for some really great shots.

Shooting jewellery can be quite tricky given the scale of it sometimes (small earrings, rings etc). It took me a while of prepping the background and accessories to get it right for this Precious Imprints shoot. I wanted to keep the colour palette very pretty and muted so called on my white marble and Inca Lilly combination to create that soft look that I was after.

Im a reeaaaal big fan of warm tones in a shot: take this bedscape I did with Tea Total Tea and Kinfolk Mag as a keen example of that. I always start by building up an image by envisaging what I want the end result to look like and work backwards. So, I knew the look I was going for and started by choosing the right linen to act as my backdrop: this would cue the colour palette for this picture. Then I accessorised with the tray which I moved around a few times before landing on this arrangement. Putting things square on can sometimes be boring, especially where a little bit of organised chaos is the end goal. From there, I added my other accessories: the flowers in the vase, magazines and then finally the tea cup. All of the elements work together to deliver the colour tone of the image - and while it took a few minutes (and practice shots) to find the right spacing between the cup, magazine and flowers, it is all a process which can't be short-circuited.

Another opportunity for food styling. This was to represent hazelnut and mixed berry pancakes with coconut yoghurt and coconut flakes. I decided to show the various elements in their own "space", in a somewhat deconstructed look if you will. While the background is important, the accessories that you use in the image can also make or break the final result. I pulled out one of my favourite tea towels for this shot - I thought it would look so striking up against the rich berry tones, the warm wood background, the clean white marble and the gold spoon. Layering on that, the texture of the coconut and hazelnuts helped finish off the shot.
